What is a LIDS Publication/Thesis number?

LIDS maintains a database of all theses (SM and PhD) and publications (publications are papers written for journal submission) written by LIDS students, researchers and faculty.

When should a LIDS number be requested?

FOR THESES: A LIDS publication number should be requested for a thesis when the thesis is in FINAL FORM. A number will be assigned to the thesis and a copy will be forwarded to the MIT Libraries for inclusion in their searchable listing. While it is not necessary to refer to the LIDS number on a thesis, it is important to acknowledge all grants that supported the research of the student. A reminder to this effect will be sent along with the LIDS publication number.

FOR PUBLICATIONS: A LIDS publication number should be requested prior to submission to a journal. While it is not necessary to refer to the LIDS number on a final publication, it is important to acknowledge all grants that support the researchers of a given publication. A reminder to this effect will be sent along with the LIDS publication number. Also, when a LIDS publication number is assigned and upon receipt of the pdf file, a copy of the pdf will be send to the MIT ILP office for inclusion in their database.

All publications sent to the ILP office earn revenue points (i.e. money) for related faculty. Information on the ILP database and its uses can be found at: http://ilp.mit.edu.

Revenue points are awarded for working papers or "preprints" that have been submitted for publication, but not yet accepted or published and, therefore, not subject to a publisher's copyright. The ILP accepts only those papers for which the faculty member and MIT hold the copyright. Only complete papers receive credit. Abstracts or reviews of books, conferences or papers are not admissible.
