"Data Science at NASA: Accelerating Scientific Discovery"

Modern scientific discovery is becoming increasingly dependent on data-driven approaches, creating new opportunities to optimize the research lifecycle and to advance scientific knowledge through the application of state-of-the-art data science methods.  This talk will highlight how NASA Science is leveraging data science to accelerate scientific discovery, including the development of domain-specific foundation models, multimodal learning frameworks, open science platforms, and data-centric AI strategies that streamline research processes. It will also address the challenges and opportunities of applying data science to complex scientific problems and outline potential pathways for collaboration to advance discovery across the broader research community.

Dr. Manil Maskey is a Senior Research Scientist and Manager of the Office of Data Science and Informatics at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. He specializes in data systems, artificial intelligence, and advanced visualization, with over 25 years of experience spanning industry, academia, and government. Before joining NASA, he developed data mining solutions at NCR/Teradata and led machine learning research for Earth science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). At NASA, Dr. Maskey has modernized data systems, advanced cloud adoption, and led major competitive programs. He also led the Science Mission Directorate’s AI initiative as the Data Science and Innovation Lead.

Outside of NASA, Dr. Maskey serves as an adjunct faculty member in the UAH Atmospheric Science department and holds leadership roles in IEEE GRSS and interagency efforts, including representing NASA in the Big Data Interagency Working Group and serving on the Steering Committee of the National AI Research Resource Program.
