The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) recognizes Marzouk for distinguished research
LIDS PI Youssef Marzouk has been named a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) class of 2025. SIAM’s announcement cites Marzouk’s “seminal contributions to multiple aspects of uncertainty quantification, particularly Bayesian computation and measure transport.”
Youssef Marzouk is the Breene M. Kerr (1951) Professor in Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT, and co-director of the Center for Computational Science and Engineering within the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing. He is a principal investigator in the MIT Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS), and a core member of MIT's Statistics and Data Science Center. Marzouk is among 25 SIAM Fellows who were elected this year in recognition of their outstanding research and service to the applied mathematics community.
Marzouk’s research interests lie at the intersection of computational mathematics, statistics, and physical modeling. He and his students develop and analyze new methodologies for uncertainty quantification, Bayesian computation, and machine learning, motivated by a broad range of engineering and science applications. His recent work has centered on algorithms for data assimilation and inverse problems; dimension reduction methodologies for high-dimensional learning and surrogate modeling; optimal experimental design; and transportation of measure as a tool for statistical inference and generative modeling.
Marzouk received his SB, SM, and PhD degrees from MIT and spent four years at Sandia National Laboratories before joining the MIT faculty in 2009. Among many honors and awards, he was named an AIAA Associate Fellow in 2018 and received a National Academy Frontiers of Engineering award in 2012, the MIT Junior Bose Award for Teaching Excellence in 2012, and the DOE Early Career Research Award in 2010. He was also an invited plenary speaker at the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) in 2023.
His professional service includes multiple terms on the editorial boards of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, the SIAM/ASA Journal on Uncertainty Quantification, and many other journals; co-chairing two major SIAM conferences and serving as program director of the SIAM Activity Group on Uncertainty Quantification; and organizing programs and workshops at ICERM, IMSI, FoCM, Oberwolfach, and myriad other venues. At MIT, in addition to co-directing the Center for Computational Science and Engineering since 2018, he has served as both graduate and undergraduate officer of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He also leads the MIT CESMIX center, an interdisciplinary computing effort sponsored by the Department of Energy’s Predictive Science Academic Alliance (PSAAP) program.
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) is an international community of 14,000 individual members. Almost 500 academic, research and development, service and consulting, government, and military organizations worldwide are institutional members. SIAM was incorporated in 1952 and today plays a central role in bringing mathematical and computational scientists together, providing a platform and intellectual community for this important work.
