"Parametric Models of Fairness for Decision-Making Problems: from power systems to vehicle routing and prices"
Fairness and equity-based questions have become paramount in critical infrastructure problem to ensure just use of resources to serve all communities. We will discuss a new parametric model of fairness called “ε-fairness'' that can be easily represented using convex constraints and incorporated into existing decision-making problem formulations without impacting the complexity of solution techniques. We develop the model from finite-dimensional norm equivalence in linear algebra and show that this model has attractive properties that makes it easy to quantify the impact of fairness on cost of optimization problems. To demonstrate its efficacy, we show two case studies, one on equitable load shed in a damaged power transmission network, and another on equitable routing for a multiple traveling salesman problem. Additionally, I will discuss an “ongoing” project on understanding fairness in energy prices and whether energy storage can be used to ensure that.
Deepjyoti Deka is a research scientist at MIT Energy Initiative. His research interests lie at the intersection of machine learning and optimization for tractable sensing and secure operation in renewable rich power grids. From 2018-2024, he was a staff scientist in the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. His work has got best paper awards at IEEE PES General Meeting 2015 and the 2021 ICML Workshop on Tackling Climate Change.
He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) from the University of Texas, Austin, TX, USA, in 2011 and 2015, respectively. He completed his undergraduate degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) from IIT Guwahati, India with an institute silver medal as the best outgoing student of the department in 2009. Dr. Deka is a senior member of IEEE, and has served as an editor on IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid.
