One of the most original thinkers in the field, Jan Willems, passed away on August 31st. His work on stability, the Riccati equation and optimal control, and on an entirely new and influential behavioral theory of dynamic systems, are just a few of the aspects of his work that remain foundational and seminal. He was a thoughtful and engaging colleague who will be greatly missed.
